Amir Darwish embodied the American dream.

Through hard work, perseverance, and integrity, he built a successful life and business in Chicago’s southwest suburbs. Yet beyond his professional accomplishments, his highest value was education. He believed that knowledge was the foundation for opportunity, independence, and generational progress.

Amir Darwish cared deeply about the Palestinian community in Chicago, but his vision extended beyond any one community. He believed that every determined student deserved a fair chance to pursue higher education and build a better future.

In honor of his legacy, his son, Rush Darwish, alongside Ashraf, co-founded the Refugee Life Foundation and established the Amir Darwish Scholarship. The scholarship reflects Amir Darwish’s lifelong commitment to empowering others through education and opportunity.

Since its inception in 2023, the Amir Darwish Scholarship has distributed over $20,000 in financial assistance to students in need, supporting young leaders as they pursue higher education and strive to create meaningful impact in their communities.

This scholarship is more than a tribute. It is a continuation of a legacy rooted in education, service, and belief in the next generation.

Scholarship Eligibility and Ideal Candidates

The Amir Darwish Scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate resilience, ambition, and a deep commitment to education.

Applicants must be currently enrolled in or accepted into an accredited college, university, or vocational program. Preference is given to students from refugee or immigrant backgrounds, particularly those who have navigated significant personal or financial challenges in pursuit of higher education.

We seek students who embody perseverance and determination. These are individuals who have overcome obstacles, balanced work and academics, and remain committed to achieving their educational and career goals. Leadership experience, multilingual ability, community involvement, and a demonstrated desire to give back are strongly valued.

Financial need is carefully considered, as the purpose of this scholarship is to remove barriers and expand opportunity for deserving students who may otherwise struggle to access higher education.
